3 Great Reasons to Write Your Goals

Goals- July 2019 .jpg

It’s the start of a new month, and you may be looking back on last month wondering where the time has gone. Did you set a goal anytime this year, but you got off track?

I promise you today is better late than never to start again. Let’s dust ourselves off and try again.

I not only want to encourage you to try again, but also to write down your goals. Many of us verbalize changes that we would like to make. But, it is time that we take it just a step further.

There are a few studies that suggest writing down your goals ensures greater potential for success.  And, I want to further provide you with three additional reasons why this critical step is important. I have found myself too many times with failed attempts at my goals. Or, not seeing the progress that I want to see. However, I have also seen a transformation in not giving up over this past year. And, part of this is due to writing my goals and dreams down.

So, here are three reasons why I am encouraging you to do the same.

  • God’s Word encourages us to

  • Writing will hold you accountable

  • You will be able to see your progress

GOD’S WORD ENCOURAGES US TO WRITE THE VISION

Goals 2- July 2019.jpg

There are several instances in God’s word that let us know to have your vision on something tangible. God instructed many Bible heroes to write down instruction and vision. Does Moses ring a bell? He had Moses to write the 10 commandments. God tells Jeremiah to write it down.

One scripture that I have heard often when it comes to goals is Habakkuk 2:2

“Then the LORD replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. (NIV)

God instructs Habakkuk to write it down. When God has given us a dream or goal to accomplish, we need to make sure that we remember it. Better yet, we want to understand it. I have had numerous dreams in the past that were truly vivid and I felt that God was speaking. However, I would sometimes wait before I would write the dream down. When, I would try to recall that dream I would forget details and get things mixed up. I was left with regret that I didn’t write it down sooner.

This is why it is so important that we choose to write out God instructed goals. And, it must be clear for us, before we can ever think about communicating it with others.

Two Other Verses to Consider are Proverbs 29:18

“Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, But happy is he who keeps the law.” (NIV)

and Proverbs 21:5

“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.”

I am believing that God will give us the tools and the instruction we need for our goals.

Accountability partners are great to help you meet your goals, but, you also need to belief in yourself, first and foremost.

Accountability partners are great to help you meet your goals, but, you also need to belief in yourself, first and foremost.

ACCOUNTABILITY

You may not be ready to share your big dreams with anyone, but you at least need a written document to remind yourself of what you are working towards.

I am big on accountability. You can have a great support system, but there will be days where you will be the only person believing in what you are doing. You have to be willing to go all in and bet on yourself. The days that I want to quit, I like to look back at my written goals. It always gives me a boost to keep pushing one more day.

In January, I talked more on accountablity plus three other tips to aid in goalsetting. Be sure to take a look!

SEE PROGRESSION

When we are trying to change our lives, they often require teeny, weeny steps. It can look like we are not progressing at all. Yet, if you have your goals outlined, then you might be surprised at yourself.

As I have dedicated myself to blogging this year, there have been PLENTY of days that I wanted to throw in the towel. Or, I would frequently ask myself and God, “Now, why am I doing this?”. However, I try to go back through my journal at least once a month. I wrote down my blogging goal and reasons for beginning this journey in my notebook. When I am able to see how far I’ve come, it gives me a little more pep in my step. Plus, I am even more motivated to move to the next level.

GOALS UPDATE

Throughout this year, I have provided a monthly goals update on the blog. I have decided that I would change it up a bit and show you my process on one goal. I am going to take you step by step through the worksheet. So, be sure to follow along.

As you can see my goal is to stay dedicated to blogging for the remainder of the year. Since my start date is July 1, I am giving myself until July 31 to tackle a couple of actions. This post is one of the tasks that I wanted to complete in 30 days. So, I am already winning!

Feel free to share your goals with me and if you have any questions about the worksheet, just let me know.

April &May 2019 Goals Update

Goals+April+2019.jpg

We are in June and I am finally getting around to my goals. We have been taking care of some things around the house and organized a big gospel concert. So, my priorities changed a little.

Nevertheless, I wanted to make sure I filled you in on my goals. My desire is to encourage women of my generation to not give up on their goals. Not only that I want to show you that this girl does not have it all together.

So, the funny thing is that I had already begun this goal update. But, magically most of my draft disappeared. Go figure. So, here I am re-writing it.

Bible in a Year Catch-up

I am still going strong with this goal. I decided that I would catch up on my Old Testament side of reading. I still have the New Testament. Be sure you take a look at some of my reasons to get through the Bible in a year.

Can I be honest with you? Sometimes, I honestly end up with more questions after I read certain passages in the Bible. Does that ever happen to you? The frustrating thing to me is that I currently don’t have the time to investigate things like I want to. My main focus is just to read the Bible cover to cover. I still take notes on the New Testament when time permits. However, even my notes are still abbreviated.

Would I still recommend someone to read the Bible in a year or less? Yes!! I am definitely appreciative when I hear things in a sermon that I just read about. And, there are even some days where I do feel the Holy Spirit confirming things in my life.

$600 To Debt

Yes, so let’s check that off the list. This really makes me so happy. My overall goal for my finances is to be debt-free in 5 years. So, I am thankful for any steps that we are taking towards financial freedom. We actually surpassed this goal. What is even more amazing and mind-blowing is that we did all of this in the midst of my husband losing his job. Yep, that’s right. We found out in early April, that my husband would be let go from his job. Now, y’all already know that your girl already has control issues. And, matter of fact, I wrote about my battles with worry in the fall. And, at that time, I was particularly worried about our finances as a one-income household.

But surprisingly, I have not been the least bit worried about what our future is going to look like. I am thankful for the peace that I have right now. And, I hope y’all continue to lift me up in prayer.

Outline of Book

No, this didn’t happen in April (or May). But, as I am writing this post. I decided to go ahead and write everything down. As I mentioned last month, I am trying to not put too many irons in the fire. Hubby and baby have totally been keeping me busy these past two months, but I am just trying to enjoy it all. When the time is right and available, I believe a book about my pregnancy journey will come forth.

15 Days of 64 ounces of water

Can we just skip over this? Because this goal was a super fail. I mean I don’t think I had one day of a gallon of water. Now, I did well with managing at least one bottle of day thanks to my Crystal Light. Other than that, I pretty much kicked that goal to the curb.

May and June Goals

Let’s just say in May, I didn’t focus on any goals. The last two months I didn’t complete all of my goals, but it is important to understand that my monthly goals are just mini-goals. Basically, I have yearlong goals that I am trying to complete, so if I do have a couple of bad months, I am allowing myself to go back to the drawing board. And, yes it is important to re-tweak your goals. Life happens to all of us, but it doesn’t have to derail us. I still go back to my Let’s Goal Worksheet, because it also helps me keep things in perspective.

But, I want all wins in June. I am hoping by re-adjusting my goals, that I can crush them and really get the ball rolling on some bigger things.

May 2019 Goals (1).jpg

I can say that I had been silent in my Health group for the month of April and May. I pretty much see motivation everyday for my finance goal and hence I was able to surpass it. It is so important to have accountability measures in place.
